Cholesterol is a substance that our body needs in order to function properly. It's needed to build our cells, maintain certain hormones, vitamin D and the protection of various body processes. The largest part of cholesterol (about 70%) is produced by the body itself; the remainder is aquired though our diet, more specifically animal fats. This explains why our cholesterol levels are so dependant on what and how much we eat.
There are 2 types of cholesterol
- HDL (High Density Lipoprotein), better known as the good cholesterol: HDL transports the excess cholesterol from our cells back to the liver, in a cleansing way for our body.
- LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein), the bad cholesterol. When there's an excess of bad cholesterol in the blood, it can get stuck in our veins and hamper our bloodflow.
Common known causes of bad cholesterol levels are a diet rich in animal fats, smoking, overweight, little exercise and certain genetics factors.
